THE EARLIEST KNOWN 1847 COVER FROM LOUISIANA.

New Orleans received its first shipment of stamps on August 27, 1847. The postmaster used blue ink until November 1847, switching to black and the occasional pen ink. The use of the "10" handstamp, a carryover from the stampless period, was immediately discontinued on stamped mail and is consequently exceedingly rare, this being most likely the only example in blue.

This cover and a usage from Cross Keys are the only known manuscript towns from New Jersey.
